JUBILEE 2025: a unique event in Rome
Steps of history
From Yobel in Hebrew meaning ‘ram’s horn’, it was the sacred instrument with which the beginning of the Holy Year was announced. From Yobel the name passed to Jubilee.
It is a very important religious event for the Catholic Church, and has its origins in Judaism in which every 50 years the rest of the earth was celebrated. The Holy Year is intended to promote holiness in earthly life, precisely because it begins, takes place and ends with sacred rituals together with the remission of sins.
In ancient times it was also the year that corresponded to the restitution of confiscated lands and the liberation from slavery.
The Jubilee was the prerequisite for healing spiritual faith, the relationship with God, the year in which every behavior and word spoken reflected the connection with the divine.
The first Christian Jubilee was proclaimed by Pope Boniface VIII and plenary indulgence was granted to those who visited the 3 basilicas 30 times, and the event had a cadence of every 100 years.
In 1350 Pope Clement VI, to equalize the interval to that of the Jewish Jubilee, shortened the cadence to 50 years and added a basilica, St. John Lateran.
Subsequently Pope Urban VI lowered it to 33 years, a period understood as the life of Jesus on earth, up to 25 years with the papacies of Nicholas V and Paul II.
Since 1470 the jubilee has followed a fixed calendar of every 25 years, but this is the second jubilee announced by Pope Francis.
Why?
There is the ordinary Jubilee, which follows a fixed cadence, and the extraordinary Jubilee if it is announced for some event and for some particular importance. Pope Francis opened the Extraordinary Jubilee on December 8, 2015, by means of the papal bull Misericordiae vultus.
If Rome moves people from all over the world, the Jubilee mobilizes millions and millions of faithful awaiting this great event.
The holy doors of the basilicas open to give forgiveness, both to those present and to their loved ones, and of great importance is the phenomenon of the mobilization of believers from every corner of the world: people of every religion come, because for those who have a strong spiritual feeling, the Jubilee is like an opportunity to gather and give strength in one of the places richest in history, charm and power that exist on Earth, united under a single creed with a thousand names.
The best-known rite is the opening of the Holy Door. It is a door that is opened only in the Holy Year.
There are 4 basilicas that have the Holy Door: St. Peter’s, St. John Lateran, St. Paul Outside the Walls and St. Mary Major.
Whoever passes through the Holy Door is symbolically promised to the faithful an extraordinary path towards salvation.
Jubilee Calendar 2025
We thought we’d leave you the list of dates here.
The Jubilee of 2025 begins on December 24, 2024 with the opening of the Holy Door of St. Peter’s Basilica, and has as its theme ‘Pilgrims of Hope’, in fact the logo is the anchor called in nautical jargon the anchor of hope, used in case of emergency to bring the ship back into balance during storms.
We wanted to divide it up so you can download the image that interests you most to plan your departure.
